Nokia 3G Booklet: Netbook Features, Laptop Price

October 19th, 2009 GULLIVER No comments

Nokia 3G BookletIs the Nokia 3G Booklet netbook really worth what consumers are paying for it? Let’s think about this for a second. Sure you can get one at Best Buy for $299, but don’t forget that there are other related costs as well. The subsidized price of $299 requires that users also sign a 2-year data plan contract. So technically, that’s another $60 per month for the next two years. Total costs for the two years add up to a whopping $1,700.

Sound tempting yet? You could always get an unsubsidized netbook for double the price – $599. Of course, this is pushing into the range for laptop pricing. Decent laptops sell for around this range, so why not just buy a more powerful machine instead? In Nokia’s defense, there are some perks to the Nokia 3G booklet netbook. It has a relatively sturdier aluminum construction, built-in GPS capabilities, HSPA wireless communications, and an above average battery life. But are these perks really worth an extra $300, especially in this economy?

We’re not advocating any machines over others. We’re just providing some food for though. Have any thoughts? We’d like to hear from you so feel free to drop us a line or leave a comment!

The Acer Aspire Timeline AS1810T will cost $599.99 and features:

Possibly the best news here is that Asus doesn’t appear to be launching different versions of these laptops on different sides of the Atlantic. When the company introduced the Acer Aspire Timeline 1810 with Windows Vista in Europe a few months ago, the company shortened the battery life and called it the Acer Aspire 1410 in the US.

Of course, if you don’t need the extended battery life, dual core processor, extra RAM and hard disk space and Windows 7, you can still pick up an Acer Aspire 1410 with Windows Vista for about $430.

Asus UL20A thin and light laptop available for pre-order

October 19th, 2009 GULLIVER No comments

Asus ul20aAmazon is taking pre-orders for the Asus UL20A-A1 laptop for $589.99. The laptop will be available to the public on Thursday, October 22nd. This will be the first 12 inch laptop from Asus featuring an Intel CULV processor. It’s similar to the Asus UL30A in many respects, but it has a smaller screen, less RAM, and a smaller hard drive. It also gets slightly less stellar battery life.

Here’s a rundown of the specs:

* CPU: 1.3GHz dual core Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300
* Display: 12.1 inch, 1366 x 768 pxiels
* OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)
* RAM: 2GB (4GB max)
* Storage: 250G (5400rpm)
* Connectivity: 802.11b/g/n WiFi
* Webcam: 0.3MP
* Battery: 7.5 hours

The price is close to $200 higher than Acer Aspire 1410, another thin and light Intel CULV-powered laptop. But the Asus UL20A has a dual core processor and a longer-lasting battery.

In related news, Amazon is now taking pre-orders for several different versions of the Asus UL30A, which is the company’s 13.3 inch model. All of the new configurations will ship with Window s7. The good news is that while there are still models that will sell for closed to $800 (with Windows 7 Professional or with 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive and a 16 hour battery!), Asus is also offering a lower priced option for $680 with Windows 7 Home Premium, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, a 12.5 hour battery, and a Core 2 Duo processor.

Toshiba gives a third name to its upcoming thin and light laptops

October 19th, 2009 GULLIVER No comments

toshiba-portege-t110-and-t130Look, I understand that companies like to distinguish the US, European, and Asian models of various computers. But usually this is done by adding a letter or two to the end of the model number. In Toshiba’s case, the company is launching its upcoming 11.6 inch and 13.3 inch thin and light laptops with Intel CULV processors under three completely different product lines.

This week the company launched the Toshiba Portege T110 and T130 in Taiwan. The former has an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, a 1.3GHz Pentium SU2700 processor, 2G of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and a 6 cell, 5600mAh battery and ships with Windows 7 Home Premium. The latter has a 13.3 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel screen, a choice of the same processor or a dual core SU4100 CPU, 2GB of RAM, up to 320G hard drive, and the same battery and operating system as the T110.

And if these computers look familiar, that’s because we’ve already seen them introduced. Twice. Earlier this week Toshiba Japan launched the Dynabook MX/33 and MX/43 which look to be pretty much the same systems as these. And last month Toshiba introduced the Satellite T115 and T135 which are, you guessed it, virtually identical to these machines.

Of course, it looks like each variation (if you can call them that) will be available in different parts of the globe at different price points. But Toshiba certainly doesn’t make things easy on tech bloggers with international audiences, does it?

Dell is also offering the Inspiron Mini 10v and Dell Inspiron Mini 10 with a Windows 7 Starter upgrade for a $30 premium when you order from Dell.com, although I know some people are going to question whether a switch from Windows XP Home to Windows 7 Starter really qualifies as an “upgrade.” Dell also lets you upgrade the Inspiron 11z to Windows 7 Home Premium for $30 or Windows 7 Professional for $130.

In other news, Amazon Germany is taking pre-orders for the Asus Eee PC T91MT with Windows 7 Home Premium, an 8.9 inch multitouch display, 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 processor, and 16GB SSD and 1GB of RAM for 506 Euros (about $754 US).  This model isn’t showing up at any US retailers that I can find yet.
