Haleron’s dual core Atom 330 Swordfish 20 netbook

October 16th, 2009 No comments

haleron-swordfish-net-20Remember Haleron? They’re the company that surprised and kind of horrified the world a few weeks ago with the announcement of the Swordfish Net102 netbook that sports two separate Intel Atom N270 processors. Not a dual core CPU — two separate CPUs sucking up your power and most likely not talking to one another properly to actually help improve performance.

But it looks like Haleron also has a slightly more sane-looking netbook called the Swordfish Net 20 that swaps the usual Intel Atom N270/N280 CPU for a dual core Atom 330 processor. This chip is usually found in desktops since it consumes more power than the N2xx series processors. But it has a pretty strong track record of playing well with Windows and Linux.

The Swordfish Net 20 includes 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive (or an optional 250GB HDD), a 10.2 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel LCD, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, 3 USB ports, VGA, Ethernet, a 1.3MP webcam, and a 5-in-1 card reader. It has a 6 cell battery and features an unlocked 3G modem. The laptop sells for $499.

Haleron also makes several lower cost netbooks with single core Intel Atom N270 processors.

HP Mini 311 RAM can be upgraded

October 16th, 2009 No comments

The HP Mini 311 (or Compaq Mini 311C in Europe) comes with 1GB of RAM soldered to the motherboard. At first glance, that might make this NVIDIA ION-powered laptop a bit less attractive, since it somewhat limits your upgrade options. But Blogeee reports there’s good news: There is another RAM slot that users can take advantage of to upgrade the RAM.

All you have to do is pop open the back and slide in a 2GB module to upgrade the memory to 3GB.

That makes the HP Mini 311 one of the most versatile low cost 11.6 inch mini-laptops around thanks to its low power Atom processor, 6 hour battery life, NVIDIA ION graphics, and even Hackintoshability.

Nokia Booklet 3G news: 1GB RAM isn’t upgradeable

October 16th, 2009 No comments

Nokia booklet-3gThought you already knew everything there was to know about the Nokia Booklet 3G? Here’s a few tidbits that I learned today, courtesy of Tnkgrl, who got to spend a little hands-on time with the laptop recently.

First up, the laptop display can be folded down to a nearly 180 degree angle, as you can see from the image above. That’s pretty cool. On the other hand, the glossy screen is nearly unreadable outdoors, as you can also see from the image above.

Another mark in the plus column is the fact that the touchpad supports 2-finger scrolling. But here’s a fairly major ding against the Booklet3G: you’d better like 1GB of RAM, because that’s all you’re going to get. The RAM is soldered to the motherboard and is not user upgradeable.

Acer Aspire One Android Netbook Goes Official

October 15th, 2009 No comments

The Acer Aspire One D250 Android netbook has now been officially announced by Acer.

d250-android-11

Looking at all the initial hands-on and video (LaptopMag, Pocket-lint, Register Hardware) Android looks very unfinished to me and at best would replace one of those instant-on OSes you get on some netbooks.

Interestingly, there is no dual-boot. Windows 7 is launched from Android (which takes about 30 seconds to boot up), because Acer says they expect you to be using Android most of the time.

Specs wise, the only thing I see different is 2GB RAM as default, you’ve still got the same 10.1” 1024×600 display, 160GB HDD. Full specs, price and launch date have yet to be announced.

uSmart M1C looks like a half-sized netbook

October 15th, 2009 No comments

uSmart M1C

Netbooks are small computers. So what do you call an incredibly tiny netbok? The uSmart M1C is clearly more of a MID or Mobile Internet Device than a netbook, thanks to its tiny 4.8 inch display. While the device has a QWERTY keyboard, I dare you to try touch-typing on it with all 10 fingers.

But the mobile devices does have very netbook-like specs, including a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor, GMA 500 graphics, and HDMI output. It weighs just 1.1 pounds and has a 4.8 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display and is capable of running Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7 or Linux.

Asus Germany unveils Windows 7 roadmap for Eee PC netbooks

October 15th, 2009 No comments

Asus Eee PC lineupWith Windows 7 set to launch in just a week, we’re about to see a whole lot of netbooks, notebooks, and other computers get a spec bump. And the Asus Eee PC lineup is hardly exempt. At an event in Germany, Asus officials outlined some of the company’s plans for the next generation of the Asus Eee PC Seashell line, including the Eee PC 1005HA, 1008HA, and 1101HA.

For the most part, the info is in keeping with a leaked product roadmap from earlier this year. But here’s the interesting part. Most of the netbooks will ship with Windows 7 Starter Edition, while the Eee PC 1101HA with an 11.6 inch display, 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 260GB hard drive will ship with Windows 7 Home Premium.

The Asus Eee PC 1005HA will be available in two different versions. Both will have 1GB of RAM, 250G hard drives, and Intel tom N270 processors. The 1005HA-H will have Bluetooth and a 10.5 hour battery, while the 1005HA-M will lack Bluetooth and include an 8.5 hour battery.

The Eee PC 1008HA will have 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, an Atom N280 processor and a 6 hour battery.
