Pre-order Toshiba’s Libretto dual screen netbook, AC100 Android model in Japan

June 23rd, 2010 Tanya No comments

This week Toshiba introduced two unusual new mini-laptops. The Toshiba AC100 is one of the first 10.1 inch mini-laptops to use an NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset and run Google Android 2.1, while the Toshiba Libretto W100 has two 7 inch touchscreen displays, with one acting as a virtual keyboard. Neither are available in the US yet, but Netbooked notes that you can place pre-orders for both models in Japan.

The Toshiba AC100 is sold under the Toshiba Dynabook AX name in Japan, where it’s going for the equivalent of about $494 US.

The Libretto W100 is a bit lot pricier, running about $1377 US.

I should point out that while the product page for the Dynabook AZ has the words “Windows OS” on it, the web site is actually pointing out that this model doesn’t run Windows, since it instead ships with Google Android. Because it has an ARM-based processor, the only version of Windows it could possibly run would be Windows CE.

Both models are expected to ship in Japan in August.

Toshiba Portégé R700 slides in with a thin design, Core power and an affordable pricetag

June 22nd, 2010 Tanya No comments

Toshiba Portégé R700Toshiba’s announced more than enough laptops for us in the past week, but the 13.3-inch Portégé R700 is ranking pretty high up there on our favorite list. The ultraportable has gotten a complete redesign at its core — there’s a new magnesium chassis that’s been re-engineered with an internal honeycomb metal that aims to dissipate heat, as well as a new chiclet style keyboard. Yet, despite its mostly metal build and onboard optical drive, it measures less than an inch thick and only weighs three pounds — yep, Toshiba is in fact claiming it’s the lightest 13.3-inch laptop ever. Rather unexpectedly, it doesn’t chicken out with ultra-low voltage power — instead there will be Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 versions. And the pricing is really enticing — the Core i3 version with 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive will retail for $999, the i5 model with a 320GB 7,200rpm drive for $1,299, and an i7 / 128GB SSD combo for $1,599. And there will also be a blue colored Best Buy version with a Core i3 CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive for $899.

Toshiba Mini NB305Toshiba has updated the Mini NB305  10.1-inch netbook, adding models with the Intel Atom N455 processor and DDR3 memory support to the lineup.

Besides the N455 CPU with GMA 3150 integrated graphics and the 1GB DDR3 memory, the Mini NB305 listed at Toshibadirect.com features a 1024×600 LED-backlight display, 250GB hard drive, 6-cell battery for up to 8.75 hours run time, Windows 7 Starter OS, and optional 3G mobile broadband connectivity by Gobi.

The NB305 starts at 2.6 pounds and has a chiclet-style keyboard, web camera and microphone, a “stereo speaker”, multi-touch trackpad, 802.11n Wi-Fi, a LAN port, three USB ports, a memory-card reader, and a VGA port.

Toshiba’s netbook with the N455 and DDR3 is offered at Best Buy for $380 in blue, red, white, and brown color. The listed 3G model – NB305-N444BN – is priced at $469.99, but is not available at the time of this writing.

Toshiba’s AC100 Android / Tegra Smartbook Revealed

June 21st, 2010 Tanya No comments

toshiba-ac100Amongst other announcements today, Toshiba has also taken the wraps off it’s first smartbook.  The AC100 is sporting a dual-core Tegra 250 on the inside and a super-slim chassis built around a 10.1″ screen on the outside.

Toshiba is claiming an 8-hour battery life (for browsing and video playback), and a full week of standby.  It also has a 32Gb SSD and 512MB of RAM on tap to keep Android 2.1 chugging along.  No official Google support here so you’ll be missing out on GMail, Maps and the Android Market etc., – Toshiba has bundled Documents To Go, Opera Mobile, their own media player and “an email client” to fill the void somewhat.

With a Tegra 2 running the show this little puppy should have no problem pumping out 1080p video – it includes an HDMI-out on the side too.  There’s also an option for 3G data for the more mobile among us.  No word on pricing or availability, but you can bet we’ll be keeping an eye on this one.

Toshiba busts out the Mini NB250 netbook, drops price on NB305

June 18th, 2010 Tanya No comments

Toshiba Mini NB250Toshiba’s just not stopping with the laptops this week, and has now outed the 10.1-inch Mini NB250 netbook, while also refreshing the Mini NB305 with an Intel Atom N455 processor. The new Mini NB250 boasts a typical 1,024 x 600 resolution backlit LED, a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455 CPU, integrated GMA 3150 graphics, 1GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 250GB hard drive. It’s also packing three USB ports, a multicard reader and a webcam, plus 802.11 b/g/n wireless, Ethernet and Bluetooth. It comes with a three-cell battery standard, but there’s an optional six-cell which will purportedly get you around eight and a half hours of life. The NB250 doesn’t have a nicely coated chiclet keyboard like the Mini NB305, but for $299 we won’t complain. Truthfully, the NB305 continues to be our fave netbook, especially now that Tosh has dropped the price down to $379.
