Asus introduces Eee PC 1015T AMD-powered netbook

June 2nd, 2010 No comments

Asus Eee PC 1015TAsus may not have mentioned the Eee PC 1015T during its press conference a few days ago, but the company is showing off the 10 inch netbook at its Computex both this week. And while at first glance, it looks a lot like all of the other 10 inch netbooks Asus has introduced this year, there’s one key difference: The Eee PC 1015T swaps out Intel components for AMD chips.

The Eee PC 1015T is powered by a 1.2GHz AMD V105 single core processor and ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics.Unlike most current netbooks, this model also supports up to 4GB of DDR3 memory.

The rest of the specs are pretty standard fare, including a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1GB of DDR3 memory, up to 320GB of hard drive space, and a 6 cell, 56Whr battery. The laptop runs Windows 7 Starter Edition and also includes the Asus Express Gate quick boot environment. The netbook comes with 802.11b/g/n WiFi and optional Bluetooth 3.0.

No word on the price or launch date.

Acer Aspire 721 with AMD K125 CPU up for pre-order

May 26th, 2010 No comments

Acer Aspire 721The Acer Aspire 721 is one of the first mini-laptops from Acer (or any company for that matter) to feature a new AMD Nile processor. And the laptop is available for pre-order from Amazon for $430 plus free shipping.

The Aspire 721 packs an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel HD display and a 1.7GHz AMD Athlon II Neo K125 single core processor. it has ATI Radeon HD 4225 graphics with 384MB of dedicated video memory, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and a 6 cell, 4400mah battery.

The laptop runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and weighs about 3.1 pounds. We won’t know for a little while just how these computers stack up against machines with Intel CULV processors in terms of performance and battery life. But for $430, the Acer Aspire 721 costs just a little more than a typical netbook and offers a higher resolution display, higher performance graphics, and a version of Windows that isn’t crippled. As long as the processor is at least as fast as a typical Atom chip, this notebook seems like it could be a pretty good deal.

Lenovo Ideapad U165 to ship with AMD processors

May 18th, 2010 No comments

Lenovo Ideapad U165Last week Lenovo introduced a series of new laptops with 11 to 15 inch displays and new Intel processors. But something that I totally missed was the mention of a new Lenovo IdeaPad U165, which  will be powered by an AMD processor.

There’s not a lot of information available at the moment, so we don’t know how much the 11.6 inch Lenovo IdeaPad U160 will cost or which of AMD’s latest low power processors it will use. But Lenovo is grouping the laptop with the IdeaPad U160 on its product page, which means that the U165 and U160 will probably feature the same case design and basic features including HDMI output. The primary difference will be that the U160 will have an Intel chipset while the U165 will be AMD powered.

HP Pavilion line made over with metal casing, new AMD and Intel processors

May 5th, 2010 No comments

hp pavilionSee that up there? That’s the new HP dm4, and you better believe that this aluminum housed 14-inch laptop not only packs a Core i5 processor and plenty of sex appeal, but starts at $729. In a nutshell, that’s basically the whole story of the four new HP Pavilions — gone are the glossy lids and LED touch shortcuts, though remaining in tact are the affordable prices and mainstream power. The inch-thick dm4 happens to be our favorite of the bunch — it’s got a soft etched pattern along the lid, chiclet-style keyboard, on-board optical drive, and is available with different Core i5 CPU and ATI discrete graphics options. And if that 14-incher isn’t for you, there’s also the 14.5-inch dv5, which instead of the brushed aluminum lid, has a matte imprinted cover that’s available in black, red and champagne. Starting at $649, the dv5 is available with Core i3, i5 and AMD’s upcoming Turion II processors, and while it doesn’t have discrete graphics options, the Intel versions will support Intel’s WiDi technology.

Going on up in size, the 15.6-inch Pavilion dv6 is all about choices — you can configure it with either a brushed aluminum or HP Imprint finish, a mulitouch screen, and AMD or Intel Core 2010 processors. The AMD variant will start at $530 and the Intel Core i5 version at $649. Last but not least is the dv7 powerhouse, which now has a Beats Audio option. No surprises here, the 17-incher can be pimped with quad-core AMD or Intel CPUs and ATI discrete graphics.

Acer Aspire One 521 netbook to feature AMD processor

April 20th, 2010 No comments

acer-aspire-one-521Acer is reportedly preparing to launch a new 10.1 inch netbook that chucks the Intel Atom chipset for an AMD chip. Macles reports that the Acer Aspire One 521 will have a 1.2GHz AMD V105 single core processor.

The V105 is part of AMD’s Nile lineup, and it has 512KB of L2 cache, support for DDR3 memory, and a total power draw of 9 watts, which makes it pretty efficient for an AMD chip. What we won’t know until someone gets a chance to run some benchmarks is how the AMD V105 compares to an Intel Atom chip when it comes to performance.

The Aspire One 521 will also reportedly have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4225 graphics and the AMD M880G chipset. As you can probably guess from the fact that the graphics processor has HD in the name, the netbook should be capable of HD video playback and it even has an HDMI output. I wouldn’t expect NVIDIA ION-quality 3D graphics performance here, but it seems like 720p and maybe even 1080p HD video support should be on the table.

According to Macles, the netbook will have optional Bluetooth 3 support and a compact charger with changeable plus. The battery is supposed to be good for up to 7 hours.

This wouldn’t be Acer’s first foray into producing an ultraportable lapotp with an AMD processor. The company has been offering the Acer Ferrari One with an 11.6 inch display and an AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor since December.
