Augen 10-inch GenBook 108 Smartbook Goes On Sale

September 16th, 2010 Tanya No comments

If you were impressed with Augen’s budget GenTouch78 7-inch Android tablet and GenBook78  7-inch smartbook then surely you’ll be impressed with their latest offering, the GenBook 108 which is a 10-inch sized smartbook which we heard about in July. It’s now up and selling at… you guessed it, Kmart, for an easy $190.

The GenBook 108 comes with a 10.2-inch 1024 x 600 display, Android 2.1, 800MHz ARM11 processor, 256MB DDR2 RAM, 2GB internal storage, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, SD card reader and a 2,100mAh battery. If their claim of the Android Market on board is true then perhaps they are pulling the same thing they did with the GenTouch78?

Unless it does indeed have the Marketplace I would avoid any smartbook  with Android 2.1. It’s just not ready, unless you’re doing some very basic web browsing or emailing then give it a go.

Toshiba’s AC100 Android / Tegra Smartbook Revealed

June 21st, 2010 Tanya No comments

toshiba-ac100Amongst other announcements today, Toshiba has also taken the wraps off it’s first smartbook.  The AC100 is sporting a dual-core Tegra 250 on the inside and a super-slim chassis built around a 10.1″ screen on the outside.

Toshiba is claiming an 8-hour battery life (for browsing and video playback), and a full week of standby.  It also has a 32Gb SSD and 512MB of RAM on tap to keep Android 2.1 chugging along.  No official Google support here so you’ll be missing out on GMail, Maps and the Android Market etc., – Toshiba has bundled Documents To Go, Opera Mobile, their own media player and “an email client” to fill the void somewhat.

With a Tegra 2 running the show this little puppy should have no problem pumping out 1080p video – it includes an HDMI-out on the side too.  There’s also an option for 3G data for the more mobile among us.  No word on pricing or availability, but you can bet we’ll be keeping an eye on this one.
