Apple iPad 3 Announcement Set for Early Next Month?

February 7th, 2012 Comments off

Last month Apple came forth to make an announcement in regards to textbooks. The tech giant announced that they would be giving consumers the ability purchase textbooks that have been specifically designed for use with iPads. While this may be great news for students and teachers, the average consumer probably cares more about a new hardware announcement than digital textbooks.

Luckily, it seems that we won’t be waiting too long until Apple comes forth with the next generation iPad 3. New reports have surfaced that say the company will be coming forth towards the beginning of next month to launch the iPad 3. What exactly this new iPad will feature has yet to be confirmed but rumors suggest a high definition display, a quad-core Apple A6 processor, improved battery life and 4G LTE connectivity.

How to make Apple’s OS X Lion less horrible

August 12th, 2011 Comments off

Apple made Lion, its eighth major OS X release, available to Mac computer users on July 20th, and the Cupertino-based tech giant noted in the first sentence of its press release that Lion includes “more than 250 new features.” Unfortunately for a seemingly large group of users — this editor included — the only new features that really mattered were the numerous annoyances that came to light after just a few minutes of usage. The new autocorrect, the annoying new event behavior in iCal, the lack of key repeat, the bizarre defaults set throughout the OS… we could go on for quite a while. Some love these new features while others seriously considered rolling back to Snow Leopard.

While unhappy users will have adjust to much of the new behavior if they wish to continue using Lion, there is now an answer for several common gripes: Lion Tweaks. Developed by “Fredrik W,” Lion Tweaks allows users to dial back some of the improvements that are common sources of agony, including the new spelling correction feature, a bunch of annoying animations and more. Lion Tweaks is at version 1.2 right now, and it looks like the app is being actively developed, so we can hopefully expect new capabilities soon. Hit the break to download the utility from the developer’s site.

Apple Laptop Batteries Can Be Hacked, Infected With Malware

July 26th, 2011 Comments off

Apple laptop batteries can be hacked to infect the laptop with malware, or possibly even rigged to explode, a well-known security researcher has found.

All modern laptop batteries have logic chips inside them that communicate with the computer they’re powering. That’s how you’re able to see how much charge is remaining. The chips also carry out regulatory tasks, such as shutting down the charging process when a battery’s at risk of overcharging.

But any logic chip has operating software — “firmware” — and that software can usually be remotely updated.

Charlie Miller, who’s famous for winning the annual Pwn2Own contest four times with his Mac OS X and iOS exploits, discovered that Apple puts the same password on all its laptop batteries in order to efficiently send out battery firmware updates.

Unfortunately, a skilled malicious hacker armed with the password could alter the firmware, Miller says. Altered firmware could be used to store malware or tweaked to damage the computer.

“These batteries just aren’t designed with the idea that people will mess with them,” Miller told Forbes tech blogger Andy Greenberg. “What I’m showing is that it’s possible to use them to do something really bad.”

Miller will be presenting his finding at next week’s Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas. He has already notified Apple of the vulnerability, and is not revealing the password.

Digging into source code

Miller, who formerly was with the National Security Agency and currently works for Denver security firm Accuvant Labs, was intrigued by a 2009 firmware update that Apple had sent out to fix a problem with MacBook batteries. Read more…

Refurb 11.6 inch MacBook Air now selling for $849

December 28th, 2010 No comments

Apple still has no plans to offer a netbook, if you define a netbook as a low cost ultraportable computer.

But Apple recently released  an 11.6 inch version of the MacBook Air, which at $999 and up is relatively cheap for an Apple laptop. And now the company is offering refurbished models for $849, making the company’s smallest and lightest laptop even more affordable.

Sure, you can buy two or three 10 inch netbooks running Windows for the same price, but good luck finding another computer with a Core 2 Duo processor, 1366 x 768 pixel display, 64GB SSD, ridiculously thin case, and NVIDIA graphics for that price. 11.6-inch MacBook Air cleared to remain packed through security, but we’d remove it anyway

October 29th, 2010 No comments

Really, TSA? Are you honestly so stoked to disappoint?

If you’ll recall, the American Transportation Security Administration got up close and personal with a first-generation MacBook Air after wrongly assuming it was an Apocalypse-bringer, and even after adjusting rules  so that iPads, netbooks and other smaller electronics could fly through carry-on screening equipment without being unpacked, we’ve still heard of (and personally experienced) occasions where agents have demanded that tablet PCs be ran through naked. If there’s a lesson to learn here, it’s that the TSA is consistently inconsistent, and you’re probably better off putting everything you own in a separate grey bucket for the sake of covering your bases. The same applies to Apple‘s new 11.6-inch MacBook Air, which is cleared to undergo TSA scanning while packed under the aforesaid amended rules. In theory, you shouldn’t have to remove it from your backpack as you struggle to reach your gate, but if we had to guess, we’d say you’ll be ask to take it out and re-run it if you try. But hey, you’re only being victimized and scrutinized in the name of security, so it’s all good. Trust us.
