ASUS Eee PC 1215B now shipping for $450, some without USB 3.0

April 11th, 2011 No comments

The 12-inch AMD Fusion based ASUS Eee PC 1215B quickly sold out in a few places but now it’s back and can be snatched up at Amazon.com and Newegg  priced at $449. That’s the high-end 1215B that gets you a Zacate E-350 chip, HD Radeon 6310 graphics, 2GB of DDR3 RAM and a 320GB HDD. Other specs (listed) include Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit, a 12.1″ 1366 x 768 display, 0.3MP webcam, Bluetooth 3.0, 3 x USB 2.0, HDMI, VGA, audio jacks and a 6-cell 56Wh battery good for up to 8 hours. Some models include a USB 3.0 port.

Be warned though that there’s no USB 3.0 to be found on the Amazon.com model and this is reflected in their specs. Newegg shows a blue USB 3.0 socket in their photos and mentions it in the specs but one user review points he got USB 3.0 while another points out he didn’t get it. Amazon.com does not show any blue port, and does not mention USB 3.0 in the specs. Best to check up before buying, if you need that port.

There’s also a low end 1215B with a C-50 chip that’s geared more towards netbooks, lacks USB 3.0 and has Radeon HD 6250 graphics, 1GB of DDR3 RAM and a 250GB HDD that costs $379 but it’s still in pre-order mode everywhere.

ASUS Eee PC T101MT Multitouch Netvertible gets Dual Core N570

March 31st, 2011 No comments

It’s been a long time since we’ve talked about the ASUS Eee PC T101MT Convertible netbook. It seems its back in vogue as it is among the first wave of netbooks to get the new Intel Atom N570 Dual Core CPU. Externally, the system remains the same but the new CPU is expected to provide a strong increase in performance.

The ASUS Eee PC T101MT was running the Intel Atom N450 at 1.66 GHz with integrated Intel GMA3150 graphics. The clock speed remains the same with the N570, but it does come with an extra core. We’re also going to be seeing the use of DDR3 memory which is another small performance increase.

The unit has 1 GB of RAM (expandable to 2GB) and a 320-gigabyte hard drive. We’ve also got WLAN, Bluetooth, three USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet and VGA connector and a 0.3-megapixel webcam. It is a kilogram in weight and a thickness of 31 millimeters. The ASUS Eee PC T101MT has a 4-cell battery, with the new CPU should probably allow for about 5 hours of running time. The display has a resolution of 1024 × 600 pixels, and the touch screen supports 256 pressure levels. As the MT is apart of the product name multi-touch support should be a given.

No word on pricing or availability.

Asus Eee PC 1015B, 1215B get official(er)

March 15th, 2011 No comments

The Asus Eee PC 1015B and 1215B mini-laptops with AMD chips won’t ship in the US until April, but the company has been showing the computers off for a few months. Now Asus has posted official product pages on its web site for each model.

As expected, the Eee PC 1015B features a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display and Windows 7 Starter Edition. It will be available with either a 1.2 GHz AMD-C30 single core processor or a 1 GHz AMD C-50 dual core chip. Both models feature AMD Radeon HD 6250 graphics.

The 10 inch netbook supports 1-2 GB of DDR3 memory and will be available with up to 500GB of hard drive space, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 or Bluetooth3.0 and a 0.3MP camera. The laptop also has HDMI output in addition to the usual range of netbook ports including VGA, USB, and audio jacks. Battery options will include a 3 cell, 23W/h battery and a 6 cell 56W/h battery.

The Eee PC 1215B features a larger 12.1 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display and runs Windows 7 Home Premium.

Interestingly, it looks like Asus will offer three different processor options: the same AMD C-30 and C-50 chips available in the 10 inch netbook, or a more powerful 1.6 GHz AMD E-350 dual core processor with Radeon HD 6310 graphics.

The Asus Eee PC 1215B will be available with 2 to 4GB of RAM, up to 500GB of hard drive, space, and all the other goodies that you get with the smaller version including HDMI, WiFI, and Bluetooth. It will ship standard with a 6 cell, 56W/h battery.

Both computers are available for pre-order from a handful of US retailers including ExcaliberPC and Abe’s of Maine.

Asus Eee PC 1015PW gets an Atom N570 update

March 4th, 2011 No comments

Asus has announced that the Eee PC 1015PW netbook will soon be available with a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N570 dual core processor.

The Eee PC 1015PW is the company’s latest 10 inch netbook with a 1024 x 600 pixel display, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, and a 250GB hard drive. Up until recently, the mini-laptop’s most distinctive features were the textured pattern on the lid and the purple, gold, and pink color options.

Now the netbook will be one of the first to feature a shiny new Atom N570 processor. Several netbooks from  Lenovo and Samsung will also hit the streets with Atom N570 chips soon, and the Acer Aspire One AOD255E is already available with the new processor.

ASUS Eee PC 1015PN spotted with dual core Atom N570

March 1st, 2011 No comments

Looks like ASUS’s flagship netbook, the Eee PC 1015PN will get an upgrade to a dual core Atom N570 processor at some point as JKK spots in his hands on video with it at CeBIT 2011.

Other than that there’s really not much else they can upgrade as the netbook is pretty much maxed out – well, apart from getting a HD screen in there. You’d barely notice any performance gain out of a N570 (1.66GHz) over an N550 (1.5GHz) but you’ll certainly notice less money in your pocket.

It’s still sporting the same 10.1″ 1024 x 600 matte display, 8-core ION 2 chip, 1GB of DDR3 RAM, 250GB HDD, 6-cell battery (are they shipping 56Wh batteries yet?) and Windows 7 Home Premium. Great to this see netbook drop in price from $430 to $360.

Asus Eee PC 1001PX gets a modest update: Meet the 1011PX

February 21st, 2011 No comments

While Asus had a few AMD powered mini-laptops  on hand at CES in January, the company hasn’t really shown off any new Intel Atom powered netbooks so far this year. Sure, you could make the Eee PC Sirocco is new… but you could also make the case that it’s just the same Eee PC 1015PW that was introduced last year.

We’ll probably have to wait until Intel’s next-generation Oak Trail and Cedar Trail chips are available before we see anything really new. But Notebook Italia did spot a new version of one of the cheapest and most popular Asus netbooks. The Eee PC 1001PX will get a modest spec bump at the CeBIT trade show next month.

The new version is called the Eee PC 1011PX, although it will be sold as the R011PX in some markets. The new version looks virtually identical to today’s Eee PC 1001PX, but it swaps out the Intel Atom N450 processor for a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N455 chip. The netbook has 1GB of DDR3 memory, a 250GB hard drive, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, and runs Windows 7 Starter Edition.

Does the Atom N455 processor and support for DDR3 memory make a big difference? Not really. But odds are that Asus will phase out the Eee PC 1001PX and replace it with the new model for a similar price in the coming months.

ASUS Eee PC 1015b comes with Ontario APU, not Zacate

January 27th, 2011 No comments

Back at CES at the start of this year, ASUS was pretty quiet about it’s AMD Fusion powered Eee PC 1015B and 1215B that many didn’t even notice them.

It was initially reported that the 1015B would have a Zacate E-350 APU like the 1215B, but that’s been growing increasingly suspect given that we’ve only seen the Ontario C-50 APU announced in the 10-inch form factor. Today, I can confirm that the 1015B does indeed come with the AMD C-50 and not the Zacate E-350 APU through Ascii.jp. The whole AMD netbook lineup appeared at AMD’s Fusion Tech Day in Japan the other day. The 1015B gives a Windows 7 WEI score of 2.8 with that being the processor. Memory scores 4.5, graphics 4.2, gaming graphics 5.5 and hard disk 5.9.
