Dell Inspiron M102z laptop with AMD Fusion now available down under

April 4th, 2011 No comments

Dell still doesn’t offer a notebook with AMD’s new Fusion processor in the US, but the folks at APC Magazine report that the Dell M102z is now available in Australia with a choice of an AMC C-50 or AMD E-350 dual core chip.

The base model runs $599 Australian and has 2GB of RAM, a 1 GHz AMD C-50 processor and Radeon HD 6250 graphics, while for another $100 you get a speeder 1.6 GHz AMD E-350 processor, Radeon HD 6310 graphics, and 4GB of RAM.

The Dell Inspiron M102z looks a lot like the M101z I reviewed last year. The difference is it has AMD’s latest chips which combine graphics and CPU functions onto a single chip. Overall that’s a good thing. The Dell Inspiron M101z was one of the best laptops I tested last year, and while the E-350 processor isn’t much more powerful in most respects to the AMD K125 chip in the M101z, it offers better graphics and lower power consumption.

The laptop has an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, 6 cell battery, and runs Windows 7 Home Premium. It has 802.11b/g/n WiFi and an HDMI output and weighs about 3.4 pounds.

Dell Inspiron R refreshed with removable lids and Intel’s latest processors

March 18th, 2011 No comments

We’ll be honest, we’ve never been the biggest fans of Dell’s colorful, patterned lids — not because some of them are pretty ugly, but because once you choose one hue, you’re stuck with it forever (or at least until you need a new laptop). Well, Dell’s finally solved that piece of the puzzle with its new Inspiron R series — the 14-, 15.6- and 17.3-inch laptops all have swappable lids.

Yep, it’s sort of like those interchangeable Swatch watch faces from the 90s — you can snap off the standard black cover, buy a new one for $19 ($29 for the Design Studio patterns), and latch it right on. But that’s not all Dell’s changed with its mainstream laptops — the rigs now have new chiclet keyboards, HD webcams, and a design that’s similar to the new XPS line.

For a budget system — the 15R starts at $529.99 — they actually feel pretty solid and the internal organs fit the same description. All three of the machines can be configured with brand new Sandy Bridge Core i3, i5, and i7 processors, Blu-ray drives, up to 8GB of RAM, six or nine-cell batteries, and USB 3.0 ports. Dell didn’t forget about the graphics either — the 14 will be available with AMD Radeon HD 6000M options, while the 15 and 17 grab a hold of NVIDIA’s GeForce GT525. All three models should be up for order today on Dell’s website with them heading to retailers later this spring.

Dell Inspiron Duo Spinning Netbook hits the streets November 23?

November 17th, 2010 No comments

At IDF our jaw did drop when what looked like a thick slate then opened up and the screen rotated around to turn into a netbook.

What I find a little suspicious about CNET’s rumour that this 10inch beauty will be hitting the streets on November 23rd is that there are no firm specification. We do know it is powered by a dual-core Intel Atom processor & runs Windows 7. If you do want to try to pick one up first you are supposed to be able to order it on Dell’s Web site. What did Dell have so say? Well they didn’t confirm pricing or availability which is too bad because this would make a pretty fun Christmas gift.

Good looks (peacock blue colour); clean design; spacious keyboard; conveniently located HDMI and eSATA ports; webcam (Dell’s Webcam Central app); above-average rattling-free audio output (boosted by speaker’s position on front edge) and multitouch touch pad are its noticeable features.

The 15.6-inch display (1,366×768-pixel resolution, LED backlights) qualifies as HD.

Dell Inspiron 11z, Mini 10 now available from Sprint

October 20th, 2010 No comments

Ever wonder what where notebooks go when they die are discontinued? Sure, it’s possible that manufacturers could actually sell out of some units, but there’s usually some stock leftover. Sometimes they get sold off at retail. Other times they’re repackaged and sold as if they were new thanks to a new feature or two — like the addition of 3G or 4G modems. That’s eactly what’s happening with the Dell Inspiron 11z.

Dell stopped offering this 11.6 inch mini-laptop earlier this year, but now you can pick one up from Sprint with a mobile broadband module that lets you access 4G WiMAX and 3G EVDO networks around the US. TheInspiron 11z has also received a CPU boost. The new version has an Intel Core i3 processor. Earlier models shipped with Intel Pentium or Celeron processors. The new model will likely run Windows 7 Home Premium.

Sprint is also offering the Dell Inspiron Mini 10, a 10 inch netbook with a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processor, a Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator, 1GB of RAM and a 250GB hard drive. The Mini 10 runs Windows 7 Starter Edition. It’s still available from Dell without the mobile broadband option.

Sprint will begin taking orders for the new models in the coming weeks. The Dell Inspiron Mini 10 will be free after rebate for customers who sign up for a long term service contract, while the Inspiron 11z will run $150 with a contract and rebate.

Dell Inspiron 11z Laptop–A Laptop With A Difference

September 13th, 2010 No comments

For people who like simple laptops, here is an ultra portable one from Dell.

The Dell Inspiron 11z notebook has a simple yet catchy design. The first impression is of course a glossy black screen cover and a silver colored palm rest. It has a flat structure, which makes easy to slide to a cover. This laptop comes with a Celeron 723 low voltage processor and a GS45 chipset. A screen resolution of 1366×768 gives enough space, just like notebooks. The speakers are a verage. Watching movies in HDMI out is a good option. In this new version Dell has included 3 USB ports and an audio jack. Other features include a LAN connector and an SDHC card slot. Dell has given a full size power connector with a65w thin power brick. The keypad is full-size one. It is easy and comfortable to type in.  The specifications at a glance are Intel Celeron 723 (1.2GHz, 800MHz FSB, 1MB Cache) Intel GS45 + ISH9M chipset, 11.6″ WXGA LED-backlit display at 1366×768, Dell 1397 ABG Wireless. For a price of $399, it is a good buy.
