Dell’s new powerhouse Precision M4600 and M6600 workstation laptops on sale May 10

April 28th, 2011 Tanya No comments

We got a dose of details  on Dell’s new Precision M4600 and M6600 workstations yesterday, and though impressed by their specs, we were left without answers to two very important questions: when can we get them, and how much will they cost?

There must be some mind readers in Round Rock, because today Dell revealed that the machines will make their debut on May 10 with prices starting at $1,678 for the M4600 and $2,158 for its 17-inch big brother, though prices surely escalate quickly from there. Turns out, the laptops also have optional IPS and four-finger multi-touch displays for your viewing pleasure and RAID  support for your (and your employer’s) peace of mind. That’s some stellar hardware for some serious coin, so interested parties should start brown-nosing the bossman immediately — or maybe just get a second job.

April 20th, 2011 Tanya No comments

Dell today unleashed the Alienware M18x, M14x and M11x R3 notebooks for gamers.

The mobile gaming rigs feature 18.4″, 14″, and 11.6″ displays respectively, and incorporate the latest Intel “Sandy Bridge” processors, as well as ATI and NVIDIA dedicated video cards.

The Alienware M18x is a brand new top-of-the-line model and the first Dell and Alienware laptop with an 18.4″ screen. Besides the 1080p display, the notebook sports a factory overclocked Intel Core i7 Extreme Quad Core processor that runs at up to 4GHz clock speed, optional dual graphics cards, and up to 32GB of 1,333MHz DDR3 memory.

Dell’s M14x is the first Alienware 14-incher. It has Core i-series CPU choices with enabled overclocking, the NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M GPU, up to 8GB 1,600MHz RAM, and 1366×768 or 1600×900 resolution.

The smallest member of the Alienware gaming laptop family has got its third refresh. The M11x R3 also has an overclockable Intel chip and fatures the GeForce GT 540M, maximal 16GB 1,333MHz system memory, and a 1366×768 screen.

All of the announced notebooks have Alienware’s a distinctive design, capability to output 3D content to an external 3D-enabled display via an HDMI port, and USB 3.0 technology. The m18x additionally has an HDMI-in port and Wireless Display solution by Intel, while the M14x and M11x R3 provide optional WiMAX connectivity and have Klipsch speakers.

Alienware M18x appears on Dell’s Canadian site, glares at you from afar

April 13th, 2011 Tanya No comments

We’ve been hearing rumors of an 18-inch addition to the Alienware  line for some time, and now its big-eyed visage is making an appearance — in Canada.

The M18x configuration page has gone live on Dell’s Canadian site, though curiously it’s displaying what looks to be a picture of the M17x. The system starts at just over $2,000 CAD with a 2.8GHz Core i7 processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, 320GB of storage, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M graphics. But, our more well-heeled neighbors to the north can step up to a 3.4GHz processor, 8GB of memory, 750GB of storage, and dual AMD Radeon HD 6970M graphics cards, pushing the price up nearly another $1,000. The 18.4-inch display manages a full 1080p resolution and you can have any operating system you like — so long as its Windows 7 Home Premium. The estimated ship date has this thing leaving the factory in early May, which means it should start hitting the domestic configurator soon enough.

Manual for Alienware M11x with Sandy Bridge confirms NVIDIA GT540M graphics

April 11th, 2011 Tanya No comments

If the previous Alienware M11x R3 spec leak  got you all giddy, then we have some good news for you: according to a manual dug up by one of our eagle-eyed readers, it appears that this year’s M11x refresh will indeed be coming with second-gen  Core i5 ULV and Core i7 ULV options, along with a faster DDR3 bus (1333MHz instead of 800MHz), a higher-res webcam (2MP instead of 1.3MP), an HD TrueLife LCD, and optional 3G / 4G mobile broadband.

But of course, the real meat on this laptop is its graphics card, which turns out to be an NVIDIA GeForce GT540M  with either 1Gb or 2GB of dedicated memory — not bad for a laptop of this size. Unsurprisingly, no dates or prices are mentioned here, but given the early start of inventory clearance, it shouldn’t be long before Round Rock reveals all.

Dell Inspiron M102z laptop with AMD Fusion now available down under

April 4th, 2011 Tanya No comments

Dell still doesn’t offer a notebook with AMD’s new Fusion processor in the US, but the folks at APC Magazine report that the Dell M102z is now available in Australia with a choice of an AMC C-50 or AMD E-350 dual core chip.

The base model runs $599 Australian and has 2GB of RAM, a 1 GHz AMD C-50 processor and Radeon HD 6250 graphics, while for another $100 you get a speeder 1.6 GHz AMD E-350 processor, Radeon HD 6310 graphics, and 4GB of RAM.

The Dell Inspiron M102z looks a lot like the M101z I reviewed last year. The difference is it has AMD’s latest chips which combine graphics and CPU functions onto a single chip. Overall that’s a good thing. The Dell Inspiron M101z was one of the best laptops I tested last year, and while the E-350 processor isn’t much more powerful in most respects to the AMD K125 chip in the M101z, it offers better graphics and lower power consumption.

The laptop has an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, 6 cell battery, and runs Windows 7 Home Premium. It has 802.11b/g/n WiFi and an HDMI output and weighs about 3.4 pounds.

Dell XPS 15-L502X, presents a screen with high resolution and for a good sound quality, it offers outstanding JBL speakers.

You will get a lot of options when it comes to configuration. This mid-sized laptop sports 750 GB hard drive with a cache memory of 8 GB. It is powered by Intel Core i5 processor of 2 Ghz, together with the Quad-Core technology. The 15-inches display is also good, and this laptop runs on the Windows 7 platform. It also comes with a Greenpeace rating of 4.9. The battery life of this laptop is fine. It also features superior Nvidia graphics, which improves its performance.

Dell Inspiron R refreshed with removable lids and Intel’s latest processors

March 18th, 2011 Tanya No comments

We’ll be honest, we’ve never been the biggest fans of Dell’s colorful, patterned lids — not because some of them are pretty ugly, but because once you choose one hue, you’re stuck with it forever (or at least until you need a new laptop). Well, Dell’s finally solved that piece of the puzzle with its new Inspiron R series — the 14-, 15.6- and 17.3-inch laptops all have swappable lids.

Yep, it’s sort of like those interchangeable Swatch watch faces from the 90s — you can snap off the standard black cover, buy a new one for $19 ($29 for the Design Studio patterns), and latch it right on. But that’s not all Dell’s changed with its mainstream laptops — the rigs now have new chiclet keyboards, HD webcams, and a design that’s similar to the new XPS line.

For a budget system — the 15R starts at $529.99 — they actually feel pretty solid and the internal organs fit the same description. All three of the machines can be configured with brand new Sandy Bridge Core i3, i5, and i7 processors, Blu-ray drives, up to 8GB of RAM, six or nine-cell batteries, and USB 3.0 ports. Dell didn’t forget about the graphics either — the 14 will be available with AMD Radeon HD 6000M options, while the 15 and 17 grab a hold of NVIDIA’s GeForce GT525. All three models should be up for order today on Dell’s website with them heading to retailers later this spring.
