Elegant HP Mini 5103 (Intel Atom N550 dual-core)

The HP Mini 5103 (Intel Atom N550 dual-core) comes out to be a standout laptop with a premium design and a set of features that you will hardly find in other laptops.

The features that its preceding version Mini 5102 lacked, can be clearly found in this HP Mini 5103 (Intel Atom N550 dual-core).Though the appearance is more or less the same as its previous version, however, the features that have been included are completely novel and comes with a new configuration of Atom N550 and a high definition screen. With such features, the laptop comes out to be the same head-and-shoulders in the crowd.

HP Mini 5103 clone stuffed with NVIDIA ION, DVD drive

The HP Mini 5103  may seem like the netbook that has it all — an all-metal case, 7200RPM hard drive, optional HD and touchscreen displays, an optional dual core CPU, hard drive sensor to prevent damage, and even a battery indicator built right into the battery. But you know what it doesn’t have? NVIDIA ION graphics.

Fortunately there’s always a Chinese knockoff artist willing to step up to the plate. The folks at Shanzhaiben have found a notebook that copies the basic design of the HP Mini 5103, but which replaces the Atom N455/N550 processor with a dual core 1.83GHz Intel Atom D525 chip. The knockoff also has an NVIDIA ION graphics processor. Oh yeah, it also has a DVD-RW drive.

If you’re wondering how the manufacturer made room for a disc drive — something that very few netbooks have, there’s an easy answer — this notebook may have netbook-like components, but it’s much larger than a typical netbook. I’m having a hard time getting all the details through Google Translate, but it looks like it has either an 11.6 inch, or a 14 inch display.

The notebook also has VGA and HDMI ports, a 1366 x 768 pixel display, and the usual array of USB ports and mic and headphone jacks.

Thanks to the larger display, it might be more fair to say that the notebook is an HP Elitebook knockoff rather than an HP Mini 5103, but design-wise, it really does seem to take most of its cues from the HP Mini 510x series.

HP introduces Mini 5103 business class netbook with Atom N550 processor

HP will start seling an updated version of the HP Mini 5103 business netbook on September 17th. The netbook is already available for $399 and up with a choice of an Intel Atom N455 or N475 processor, but starting on the 17th you’ll be able to snag one with a 1.5GHz Intel Atom N550 dual core processor.

The company says the new chip offers a performance boost of about 25% while resulting in about 15 minutes lower battery life. That’s not a bad tradeoff, since HP’s current crop of business netbooks get a respectable 6 hours of run time.

Aside from the new processor option, there aren’t many differences between the new model and the older HP Mini 5102. The netbook will continue to come with a 7200RPM hard drive or a high speed solid state disk. The 10.1 inch display is available in 1024 x 600 and 1366 x 768 pixel resolutions, and there’s a capacitive touchscreen option as well.

The netbook case is made of metal, with an aluminum top and a magnesium alloy bottom. Other options include GPS or 3G mobile broadband. HP also plans to start offering a new quick-start feature that will show information from your Outlook calendar while your computer is booting. You can either pause to view the calendar in more detail, or wait a moment to let it boot the full Windows 7 operating system at that point.’

HP will offer the Mini 5103 with Windows 7 Starter, Pro, or Home Premium, SUSE Linux Enterprise 11, or FreeDOS.

HP Mini 5103 business netbook in the works

HP appears to be preparing to refresh its business class netbook line with a new model called the HP Mini 5103. For the most part, this model looks like the HP Mini 5102  I reviewed a few months ago. But the new model will come with a choice of a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N455 or 1.86GHz Intel Atom N475 processor.

What that means is that unlike the HP Mini 5102, the 5103 supports faster DDR3 memory — although the difference in performance will likely be pretty minimal.

Like other business netbooks from HP, the Mini 5103 has premium features such as a 7200RPM hard drive, an accelerometer to shut off the hard drive in the event of a fall, and a magnesium alloy case. The netbook also comes with a slew of options including an optional Broadcom HD video accelerator, optional touchscreen display, choice of a hard drive or solid state disk, and a choice of operating systems including SUSE Linux, Windows 7 Starter, or Windows 7 Home Premium.

You can find detailed specs at HP Italy. The HP Mini 5103 is also available for purchase in Italy for between €482 and €597.
