Lenovo launches Classmate PC netbook for students

March 11th, 2011 Tanya No comments

Intel has been pushing its Classmate PC  designs for student-oriented netbooks for the past few years. Basically it’s Intel’s answer to the OLPC XO Laptop — a semi-rugged computer that can stand up to the wear and tear of a primary school environment and a student backpack. Oh yeah, the computers also have Intel chips and are designed to run Windows.

While around 3 million computers based on the Classmate PC design have been deployed in schools around the globe, we haven’t seen a lot of Classmate laptops from big name PC makers… until now. Lenovo is partnering with Intel to launch a kid-friendly netbook called the Classmate+ PC.

The Classmate+ PC has a 10.1 inch display, an Intel Atom N455 processor, a 1.3MP camera, flash card reader, and WiFi. It runs Windows 7 and has a durable plastic case with a handle built into the body of the laptop for easy carrying.

Lenovo will be selling the Classmate+ PC to educational institutions and governments rather than end users. The company has already signed a deal to ship 158,000 units to students in Argentina this spring.

Lenovo posts ThinkPad X220 specs online, includes IPS display, SSD, and 23-hour battery options

March 9th, 2011 Tanya No comments

Go to Lenovo’s online store looking for an X Series laptop to call your own and you’ll be greeted by the familiar X201.

But go to Lenovo’s spec sheet repository and you’ll find a lush PDF file detailing a new ThinkPad X220 model that seems set to become available very shortly indeed. Sized at a somewhat unconventional 12.5 inches, this fresh contender will feature a new “buttonless” touchpad — though it retains the mouse keys in support of the TrackPoint navigator — while offering the sweet nectar of a 1366 x 768 IPS display, up to a 2.7GHz Core i7-2620M CPU, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, and a choice of Intel SSDs  ranging up to 160GB. The 9-cell battery is rated to last you 15 hours and there’s an additional external battery pack that will keep you tether-free for 23 hours.

Lenovo ThinkPad 2011 Laptops Officially Announced

February 25th, 2011 Tanya No comments
Lenovo today officially released the new ThinkPad business laptop lineup, including the mainstream T Series T420s (14″), T420 (14″) and T520 (15.6″), budget-friendly L Series L420 (14″) and L520 (15.6″), and W Series W520 (15.6″) mobile workstation.
The Lenovo ThinkPad 2011 notebooks feature Intel’s 2nd Generation Core “Sandy Bridge” processors with Turbo Boost performance optimization technology, while Lenovo Turbo Boost+ enables the laptops to stay in Turbo Boost overclocked mode even longer by keeping processor temperatures below required thermal limits. The notebooks also sport “all-day” battery life in select models, Nvidia Optimus switchable graphics in the T and W series, Intel vPro system management technology, and improved video and voice communication.
According to Lenovo, the ultra-thin ThinkPad T420s delivers up to 10 hours of battery life with its 6-cell and optional optical bay battery combined. The sub-four-pound laptop “speeds up boot time 30 percent” and includes the latest Dolby Home Theater v4 audio. The thicker T420 has a battery life of “up to 30 hours” with the standard and extended slice battery combined, while the W520 mobile workstation delivers “twice the performance of previous models”.
Full laptop specifications were not available at the time of this writing.
The 2011 Lenovo ThinkPad T, L and W Series will be available starting in March. Prices for the T420s, T420, and T520 start at approximately $1,329, $779, and $909, respectively. The L420 and L520 will start at $719, while the W520 will have a base price of $1,329.

Lenovo ThinkPad X120e notebook now available for $399 and up

February 24th, 2011 Tanya No comments

This is a pleasant surprise. Last I’d heard Lenovo had delayed the US launch of the ThinkPad X120e business-class ultraportable laptop until March. But guess what showed up on the Lenovo web site today?

The Lenovo ThinkPad X120e is now available for purchase for $399 and up. The base price gets you a laptop with an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display, a 1.5 GHz AMD E-240 single core processor, AMD Radeon 6310 graphics, 2GB of DDR3 memory, a 250GB hard drive and a 3 cell, 40 W/h battery. The laptop comes standard with 802.11b/g/n WiFi.

If you want a dual core AMD E-350 dual core processor, Bluetooth, additional memory or hard drive space or a 6 cell, 56 W/h battery, you’ll have to pay extra. But I was able to configure the laptop with a high capacity battery and dual core processor for just $489, which still isn’t bad at all.

The base price also includes Windows 7 Home Premium. The ThinkPad X120e is also available with Windows 7 Professional for $50 more.

Lenovo ThinkPad X120e to start shipping March 8th

February 12th, 2011 Tanya No comments

The ThinkPad X120e is a new business class ultraportable laptop from Lenovo. It features an 11.6 inch display, a low power AMD processor, and Radeon HD graphics. Lenovo introduced the laptop at CES, and now the company is confirming that it will go on sale starting February 15th March 8th.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that at launch it won’t be available in Western Europe, Japan, Australia, or Latin America. Basically if you live in a country where the Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 11 is available, you won’t be able to pick up a ThinkPad X120e for now.

Lenovo says the X120e will run $400 and up. You’ll be able to configure the Lenovo ThinkPad X120e with up an AMD E-350 dual core processor, and up to Windows 7 Professional. The laptop comes standard with a 6 cell, 7.5 hour battery and an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel anti-glare display. Like other ThinkPad models, the X120e also comes with a TrackPoint system which includes a multitouch touchpad and a pointing device in the middle of the keyboard.

Update: CNET reports that the US launch date has been pushed back to March 8th, and Lenovo has confirmed the change via Twitter, although my contact at Lenovo says the laptop is still scheduled to ship on February 15th.

Lenovo G550 2958–C 900

February 11th, 2011 Tanya No comments

The G550 belongs to the value line models of Lenovo laptops.

The configuration consists of 2.2 GHz dual core processor, 15.6″ TFT display, 4 GB (max) Memory, 160 GB – Serial ATA-300 – 5400 rpm Hard Drive and comes preloaded with Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium OS.  The keyboard is well laid out and responsive.  The build quality feels very sturdy, but not up to the standards of other think pads.  The G550’s performance adds very much in its favor and the dual core processors delivers adequate performance.  The ergonomics is not up to the mark and it has a poor display.  This laptop just does not have it in it to hold its own against the other capable competitors.
