MSI slightly tweaks the U160 netbook, ends up with the U160MX

January 25th, 2011 No comments

MSI’s Wind U160 and U160DX 10-inch netbooks are old news already, and their new U160MX, released in Italy, will be old news pretty quickly because there’s barely anything new here apart from a new brushed metal lid (instead of gloss) and minor design tweaks – the trackpart button has been pushed in and no longer covers the front edge, and the part above the keyboard is slightly different.

Nothing you’d notice better unless you looked pretty carefully.

There’s no AMD Fusion here, or even an Atom N570, just the Atom N550, a glossy 10″ 1024 x 600 display, 1-2GB of DDR3 RAM, 160GB / 250GB HDD, a 3-cell or 6-cell 5,200 mAh battery (which protrudes out the back like the rest of the U160 series) and Windows 7 Starter. It’s out in Italy for around 300 euros.

MSI Wind U160 to get a dual core Atom N550 chip

MSI launched the Wind U160 netbook along with a few other 10 inch models earlier this year.

At the time they were shipping with the same boring 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 processors found in most other netbooks of the day, but Netbook News reports that MSI will soon introduce a new version of the U160 with a shiny new Intel Atom N550 dual core chip.

The overall design o the netbook hasn’t changed. It still has an island-style keyboard, a touchpad with a bumpy texture, and a 6 cell battery that sticks out from the back and bottom of the laptop.
