Asus Eee PC X101 MeeGo netbook unboxed in Vietnam

August 9th, 2011 Comments off

The Asus Eee PC X101 hasn’t gone on sale in the US yet, but it’s expected to hit the streets in September. Meanwhile, the folks at Vietnamese site Tinhte.vn have already managed to get their hands on the mini-laptop. The Eee PC X101 is one of the first netbooks from a major computer company to ship with MeeGo Linux instead of Windows. But that’s only one of the things that makes it special — it’s also expected to sell for under $200 in the US (or about 169 Euros in Europe).

In the unboxing video, you can see that the Vietnamese version will come with several different power adapters. I suspect US customers will get just one. The reviewer also shows off the tablet’s thin sides (it measures about 0.7 inches thick), 2 USB ports, Ethernet jack, and VGA port.

The Eee PC X101 has an 8GB solid state disk instead of a hard drive and runs MeeGo Linux. It also uses a 1.33 GHz Intel Atom N435 processor, which is one of the least expensive (and least powerful) Intel Atom chips available. Those decisions were made to keep the laptop’s price low. Asus will also offer an X101H model for a higher price. That version will be available with a 250GB hard drive and Windows 7.

MeeGo is an operating system optimized for netbooks, tablets, and in-vehicle entertainment systems. The user interface feels like a cross between a desktop OS such as Windows and a mobile OS such as Android. Most apps, for instance, run in full screen mode instead of in smaller windows.

There’s no start menu or taskbar, per se, but there are a series of tabs at the top of the screen that you can use to switch between different parts of the operating system. One window shows a list of installed apps, while another shows system settings. A third area shows networking settings, and a fourth shows updates from your social networking sites.

While the unboxing video is in Vietnamese, it’s worth watching with the sound off if you want an overview of how the first MeeGo Linux netbook from Asus will work.

Acer unveils Aspire E100 netbook for students with Android, Windows

January 26th, 2011 No comments

Acer has introduced a new netbook dubbed the Aspire E100 and the E stands for Education… or maybe Europe. Notebook Italia reports that Acer is working with the European Schoolnet on the project.

For the most part the E100 looks like a standard Acer netbook. The key differences are that schools can customize the mini-laptop with their logos, and there’s a pocket for students or teachers to put a label with their names. Acer also preloads some education oriented software including the Acer Classroom Manager which lets teachers monitor and interact with students using the laptops.

The Acer Aspire E100 features a 10.1 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, a 6 cell battery, a 250GB a hard drive, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 and Ethernet. There’s an Intel Atom processor inside the netbook, although Notebook Italia doesn’t specify which Atom chip. I’m guessing N455, N475, or N550 since the computer uses 1GB of DDR memory.

Like some versions of the Acer Aspire D255 and D260 netbooks, the E100 can dual boot Windows 7 and Google Android.

There’s no word on whether the netbook will be launched in the US or other markets outside of Europe.

Toshiba has new netbooks going on sale at IT Month here we got our hands on the Toshiba NB500 which is running the Intel Atom N550 Dual Core processor with 1GB DDR3 RAM & a 250GB Hard drive.

Connectivity wise we’ve got the usual, bluetooth, wifi, 3 USB 2.0, vga, audio jacks, SD card reader, kensington lock, ethernet & the option for 3G. Taiwan will not be offered the 3G option on this early release.

The textured finish of this netbook is really what has us sitting up an taking notice, that combined with a keyboard that doesn’t flex at all and a trackpad that is slightly set back from the space bar to prevent accidentally moving the cursor and we’ve got a premium netbook on our hands. Since it is for sale on the 4th in Taipei it is sporting a premium price tag of 13800NT or ($450USD), we do hear that the price point will drop in Q1 since this netbook is on early release here in Asia. This was one of two netbooks to be released by Toshiba, if you want to check out the NB520 with Harman/Kardon speakers and a few more luxury upgrades then try clicking here.

Toshiba has a new netbook and man is it sexy, it’s a design change from any other netbook on the market with Harman/Kardon speakers integrated into the palm rest. The textured finish on the hood with a brushed metal feel makes the netbook seem very sophisticated. Under the hood we’ve got the Intel N550 Dual Core processor, 1GB DDR3 RAM, 250GB shock absorbing drive.

Running Windows 7 starter its got a few features that are a nice touch like sleep to charge and sleep to listen to music which is something I haven’t heard of before. We’ve also got an assortment of colours with warm brown, lime green, sunlight copper, turquoise. It’s going on sale in Singapore for $599 Singapore Dollars which is $450 USD.

Dell Inspiron Duo Spinning Netbook hits the streets November 23?

November 17th, 2010 No comments

At IDF our jaw did drop when what looked like a thick slate then opened up and the screen rotated around to turn into a netbook.

What I find a little suspicious about CNET’s rumour that this 10inch beauty will be hitting the streets on November 23rd is that there are no firm specification. We do know it is powered by a dual-core Intel Atom processor & runs Windows 7. If you do want to try to pick one up first you are supposed to be able to order it on Dell’s Web site. What did Dell have so say? Well they didn’t confirm pricing or availability which is too bad because this would make a pretty fun Christmas gift.

Dell has released and update to their 2100, the Dell Latitude 2110, which at first glance looks pretty similar buts it does have a few updates. Well, the options to update, like with all Dell’s the combinations are endless, but the one thing they will all have in common is the chassis and the CPU it will be running the 1.83GHz Intel Atom N470 processor and GMA 3150 graphics with 1GB of RAM.

You’ll have the option to add a touch screen which is the big one for me. Choice of operating system:Ubuntu 9.10, Window XP, Windows Vista HOme Basic, or Windows 7 Starter. For hard drive you can also go between 16GB or 64GB SSD or a 160GB, 5400 rpm hard drive or a 250GB 7200 rpm model.
