March 17th, 2011 Tanya No comments

There was a time when you couldn’t find a good laptop screen size between 12.1 inches and 13.3 inches. And then Lenovo came along and started launching notebook after notebook with a 12.5 inch display. Now Samsung is getting ion the action with its new line of business class notebooks.

The company introduced three new lines today, the Samsung Series 2, Samsung Series 4, and  Samsung Series 6 business class notebooks. The Series 2 and 4 models will each be available with either 12.5 inch or 14 inch displays, while the Series 6 comes with a 14 or 15.6 inch screen.

While Samsung isn’t naming any prices yet, the 12.5 inch Series 2 is likely to be the cheapest model in the new lineup. It features an Intel Celeron processor and Windows 7 Professional Edition. It will come with 2 to 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and a 1366 x 768 pixel display. The computer will have Intel GMA HD Integrated graphics.

The Series 4 notebooks will also be available with 12.5 inch screens, but this model will come with a higher performance processor, with a choice of a Core i3, Core i5, or Core i7 chip. The laptops will support up to 6GB of RAM and come with up to 500GB of hard drive space.

All of the new models have anti-shock hard drive protection, anti-spill case design, and other business-friendly features including a durable magnesium alloy case and a 3 year warranty. The higher end Series 4 and Series 6 notebooks will also have Fingerprint sensors and Trusted Platform Module chips.

The Samsung Series 2 and 4 should begin shipping in April, with the Series 6 following in May. It should be interesting to see how these little guys stack up to Lenovo’s 12.5 inch business notebooks in terms of price and performance.

BlackBerry PlayBook vs Samsung Galaxy Tab

February 25th, 2011 Tanya No comments

2011 is surely the year of netbooks and tablets, but two models will definetly meet ”face to face” – the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the RIM BlackBerry PlayBook.

Of course, there are other great tablets, but this two can play a tag of war due to their touchscreens – Blackberry has a screen size of 130x194x10 mm, while the Samsung Galaxy Tab’s screen size is 190.1×120.5×12 mm.

Both tablets have two cameras – front and rear-facing cameras.

The Galaxy tab and the Playbook both support flash and and the convenience of surfing the web “organically” is present in both devices. The Playbook and the Galaxy Tab both support USB and MicroSD.

The two tablets are similiar when it comes to the processor too. Both of them have 1GHZ processors, though BlackBerry Playbook’s processor is dual-core. Blackberry Playbook has larger memory 1Gb against Samsung Galaxy Tab’s 512MB.

Both devices will run on 4G, BlackBerry will be sold via Sprint and the Galaxy tab’s new version via Verizon Wireless, and will be using the carrier’s 4G LTE (Galaxy Tab 4G version has 1.2 GHz processor).

The tablets have different operating systems  -  BlackBerry Tablet OS, powered by QNX technology, for BlackBerry Playbook and Android FroYo (version 2.2) for the Galaxy Tab, thought it is promised to be updated to Android Gingerbread (version 2.3).

As for the price, there is not a big difference – the price of BlackBerry Playbook could hit $499 for 32 GB model, while Samsung Galaxy Tab 32 GB model is around $400 to $500 depending on the carrier and the promo they run.

Based on reviews about Galaxy Tab last year, the tablet’s size of 7 inches is actually a plus factor when it comes to some consumers who what their tablet to be a palm friendly, and easy to carry device. So, expect to see Samsung Galaxy Tab and BlackBerry Playbook to be the arch-enemies when it comes to this year’s tablet wars.

Samsung Series 9 spotted in 11.6 inches (retail listing)

February 16th, 2011 Tanya No comments

The Samsung Series 9  13-inch notebook which debuted at CES was an extremely thin and light notebook but we’re just not that keen on large notebooks. Good news is there might be an 11.6-inch version on the way!

An Engadget tipster noted that Provantage  has an early listing (as they always do for everything) for an 11.6-inch Samsung Series 9 notebook with a model number 900X1A-A01. If the spec sheet is right the size is 11.7 x 7.8 x 0.65 and weight is 2.88 lbs (1.3 kg) which is around the weight of a typical 10-inch 6-cell netbook. Sadly, it’s going to be pretty pricey – $1164.59 from this merchant.

The specs include an 11.6″ 1366 x 768 dispay, Core i3-380UM processor, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, 64GB SSD, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Gigabit LAN, Bluetooth 3.0, 1x USB 2.0, 1x USB 3.0, HDMI, audio jacks, RJ45, microSD card slot, 4-cell 5,680 battery and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Samsung releases new NF208 netbook

February 8th, 2011 Tanya No comments

Samsung has released a new NF208. It’s very similar to Samsung NF210  we reported on while back only with upgraded dual core Intel Atom N550 chip and no OS.

Most netbooks have windows or linux pre-installed, this one comes clean with no operating system. At least you don’t feel bad about formatting one you’d paid for to install your favorite OS.

Samsung NF208 netbook has a 1024 x 600 pixel display, 2GB of DDR RAM, a 320GB of storage and 6 cell battery. This model will not make it to shores of greater America, sad as it is.

Samsung NC110 netbook up for pre-order

February 7th, 2011 Tanya No comments

Samsung quietly introduced a couple of new 10 inch netbooks at CES this year including the Samsung NC110, NC220, and NS310.

The laptops feature a slightly refined design from Samsung’s earlier models, with nice wide touchpads, chiclet-style keyboards, and a wavy design on the sides. But the biggest change is that the Samsung NC110 is expected to be available with the upcoming Intel Atom N570 dual core processor.

Now J&R is taking pre-orders for the Samsung NC110, but unfortunately the N570 chip is nowhere in sight. The product page says the Samsung NC110-A02US will have a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N455 processor, 1GB of DDR3 memory, a 250GB hard drive, a 6 cell battery, and Windows 7 Stater Edition. J&R is taking pre-orders for $319.99.

Hopefully another version will be available with that elusive 1.66 GHz Atom N570 chip in the coming months.
