Acer’s Aspire 5749 MeeGo notebook gets a Sandy Bridge core, hails from Deutschland

August 31st, 2011 Comments off

MeeGo running on an Acer notebook? Hardly surprising stuff. Pairing that OS with a Sandy Bridge CPU, however, is something to take note of. Contradicting Acer’s past claims that the company would only issue the operating system on Atom-based netbooks, the Aspire 5749 has popped up on Amazon.de serving up a 2.1GHz Core i3 processor and 15.6-inch 1366 x 768 display.

Weighing in at 2.6kg (about 6lbs) and measuring 34mm in thickness, the Taiwanese-made laptop will set you back 400 Euros (about $577), and comes packed with 4GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB of storage, Intel’s GMA 3000 graphics set, DVD burner, three USB 2.0 ports, a 2-in-1 card reader and, of course, WiFi. Itching to get your import on? Then skip past the break and head to the source below.

HP rolls out EliteBook 8460w, 8560w and 8760w laptops for the business-minded

April 14th, 2011 No comments

It’s still not saying anything about the lightweight EliteBook 2560p and 2760p  models that leaked out last month, but HP has now gotten official with three new slightly less portable laptops: the 14-inch EliteBook 8460w, 15.6-inch 8560w and 17.3-inch 8760w.

The latter is expectedly on the top end when it comes to specs, with it boasting your choice of Sandy Bridge processors up to a Core i7-2920XM, either AMD FirePro or NVIDIA Quadro graphics with up to 4GB of memory, and up to three hard drives with RAID 5 support. The other two EliteBooks each dial things down a bit across the board, but you can still get up to a Core i7-2820QM on each of them, and there’s not even an option for integrated graphics. Look for all three to be available next month with base prices starting at $1,299, $1,349 and $1,899 — full press release is after the break.

Manual for Alienware M11x with Sandy Bridge confirms NVIDIA GT540M graphics

April 11th, 2011 No comments

If the previous Alienware M11x R3 spec leak  got you all giddy, then we have some good news for you: according to a manual dug up by one of our eagle-eyed readers, it appears that this year’s M11x refresh will indeed be coming with second-gen  Core i5 ULV and Core i7 ULV options, along with a faster DDR3 bus (1333MHz instead of 800MHz), a higher-res webcam (2MP instead of 1.3MP), an HD TrueLife LCD, and optional 3G / 4G mobile broadband.

But of course, the real meat on this laptop is its graphics card, which turns out to be an NVIDIA GeForce GT540M  with either 1Gb or 2GB of dedicated memory — not bad for a laptop of this size. Unsurprisingly, no dates or prices are mentioned here, but given the early start of inventory clearance, it shouldn’t be long before Round Rock reveals all.

Lenovo T420s and W520 notebooks hit the streets, one with Quadro Optimus graphics

March 30th, 2011 No comments

You knew they were coming, but today it’s time to choose — will you withstand the temptation of a tricked-out ThinkPad W520 workstation or T420s thin-and-light with Sandy Bridge  CPUs?

Yes, Lenovo’s rolling out the red eraserheads this month for Intel’s new chips as fast as it possibly can, with these latest two models hot on the heels of the ThinkPad T420 and T520 and ThinkPad Edge E420s. The $1,199 14-inch T420s distinguishes itself with slightly slimmer construction, a 1600 x 900 resolution and a 2.5GHz Core i5-2520M CPU in a package that weighs less than four pounds — strangely, there’s no Core i7 or discrete graphics here — while the $1,449 W520 workstation comes standard with a 2.7GHz Core i7-2620M chip and an NVIDIA Quadro 1000M GPU with Optimus graphics-switching tech. Of course, the W520 base configuration comes with only a 15.6-inch, 1366 x 768 screen, but don’t you fret — an additional cash infusion can get you a 1600 x 900 or even a full 1080p display to render your video with. Go ahead, spec them out to your heart’s content, while we wait for an even more groundbreaking rig to drop from the ThinkPad heavens.

The dark-brown Asus K53E-A1 and K53E-B1 run Windows 7 Home Premium OS and are priced at $631.38 and $723.18, respectively.

The laptop maker has also K53SV and K53SJ listed on the company’s website, but these are not available for purchase. The SV and SJ include dedicated Nvidia video cards and optional Core i7 quad-core processors.

Dell Inspiron R refreshed with removable lids and Intel’s latest processors

March 18th, 2011 No comments

We’ll be honest, we’ve never been the biggest fans of Dell’s colorful, patterned lids — not because some of them are pretty ugly, but because once you choose one hue, you’re stuck with it forever (or at least until you need a new laptop). Well, Dell’s finally solved that piece of the puzzle with its new Inspiron R series — the 14-, 15.6- and 17.3-inch laptops all have swappable lids.

Yep, it’s sort of like those interchangeable Swatch watch faces from the 90s — you can snap off the standard black cover, buy a new one for $19 ($29 for the Design Studio patterns), and latch it right on. But that’s not all Dell’s changed with its mainstream laptops — the rigs now have new chiclet keyboards, HD webcams, and a design that’s similar to the new XPS line.

For a budget system — the 15R starts at $529.99 — they actually feel pretty solid and the internal organs fit the same description. All three of the machines can be configured with brand new Sandy Bridge Core i3, i5, and i7 processors, Blu-ray drives, up to 8GB of RAM, six or nine-cell batteries, and USB 3.0 ports. Dell didn’t forget about the graphics either — the 14 will be available with AMD Radeon HD 6000M options, while the 15 and 17 grab a hold of NVIDIA’s GeForce GT525. All three models should be up for order today on Dell’s website with them heading to retailers later this spring.

ASUS U30S appears overseas with Sandy Bridge and NVIDIA GT520M graphics

March 15th, 2011 No comments

You know who has been relatively quiet on the Sandy Bridge front? ASUS. Sure, it’s released some new gaming rigs  with fresh Core i7 CPUs, but we haven’t really heard a peep out of the company when it comes to its mainstream U or UL series laptops.

Well, that should all be changing soon as the guys over at NetbookLive  got their hands on a U30S, which packs a Sandy Bridge Core i5-2410M processor, 8GB of RAM, NVIDIA’s 520M graphics with Optimus, and a eight-cell 84Wh battery. Yep, it’s one nicely spec’d machine, and according to the benchmarks it not only runs quite fast but it also lasts over five hours on a charge. The only thing the reviewer seems to take issue with is the size and weight of the 1.3-inch / 4.2-pound machine, and we really don’t blame him — it looks identical to the U30Jc we reviewed  exactly a year ago. All that said, we’re betting this thing has a sweet price tag attached to it when it finally gets an official unveil — until then, hit the source link for a glimpse at what’s coming.
